The New Shit | 3/9

CDs
It's all been leading up to this week. After countless quiet Tuesdays of less-than-notable releases, the motherlode hits tomorrow. Brace yourselves because there's a metric shitton of records demanding your attention that are being released this week. You've been warned.

Frightened Rabbit | The Winter Of Mixed Drinks
Probably one of our three most anticipated releases of the year (so far) along with Beach House's excellent Teen Dream and Band Of Horses' Infinite Arms in May. Frightened Rabbit's sophomore record, The Midnight Organ Fight was the best album of 2008 and worked in large part due to head Rabbit Scott Hutchison's fierce breakup anger that manifested itself in lines like, "It takes more than fucking someone you don't know to keep warm," or "Why won't our love keel over as it chokes on a bone." Judging by "Swim Until You Can't See Land" and "Nothing Like You," the vitriol is still in great supply, which can only be a good thing.

Gorillaz | Plastic Beach
After rumors that 2005's Demon Days was to be Gorillaz's swan song, they return five years later with Plastic Beach. Lead single "Stylo" seems to suggest more of a late night vibe than their previous two records had. This will also be the first Gorillaz release without a top-flight producer at the helm as Dan The Automator and Danger Mouse were at the boards for albums one and two, respectively.

Broken Bells | Broken Bells
And speaking of Danger Mouse... his latest project (one of roughly 289 different collaborations he has running right now) with James Mercer of The Shins, called Broken Bells, drops their debut LP. Pretty much everything these two touch turns to gold lately so expectations are high for this one.

Up In The Air
Granted, we've only seen 40% of the nominees for this year's Best Picture (The Hurt Locker? Really?) but this would have been our pick for last night's top prize. George Clooney shines as usual and Anna Kendrick gives a breakout performance. Highly recommended.

Precious: Based On The Novel "Push" By Sapphire
Mo'Nique, Oscar winner. Let that one sink in for a minute.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
The sequel to a cult movie that no one realizes actually sucks. Gotta applaud the fan fervor that resulted in this film getting made but couldn't we spend that energy on a more deserving movie next time? Thanks in advance. Love, The Dirtywhirl

Old Dogs
Everyone who bought a ticket to see this movie please go run into oncoming traffic. Watching Robin Williams in something like World's Greatest Dad is part of what makes garbage like Old Dogs so infuriating. That and the fact that we have a functioning brain.
